In the right hand pane, locate and double click on an entry labeled Remove the Desktop Cleanup Wizard. Many thanks azarl, I'll give that a go later.
That's just asking for trouble! I don't open attachments in email, even from known sources - until checked out first. Note that by selecting Enabledyou are actually disabling the wizard, not enabling it. Remove the Desktop Cleanup Wizard from Windows 7. They're very weird crashes too nothing I've experienced when I was using xp. The most frustrating part is how the wizard decides which files and shortcuts are old and which are still in windowa enough to keep on the desktop.

I am running Windows 7 professional and have never see any desktop icon move or disappear, the desktop clean up wizard has never shown up. Founder of Help Desk Geek and managing editor.

Although the Desktop Cleaning Wizard seems like a good idea, most users of Windows 7 find it annoying when it pops up and not very useful while using it. It's not installed in home editions but you can install it - see here.

If you find the Desktop Cleanup Wizard annoying, you can remove it by editing a group policy. Disable Aero Permanently or Temporarily in Windows 7. Try the Microsoft fix for this know issue.
It's just a bit too complicated, and as for me being let loose on the registry If I choose to remove an icon, shortcut or whatever from my desktop I will. Thanks for your input.
